Paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting are very useful for academic writing. I wold like to talk about the means of these terms.
1) Paraphrasing
- to restate the idea in another word by simple ways
- to make approximately same length as the original state
2) Summarizing
- to sum up the statement by your own words
- including just the main idea
- much shorter than paraphrasing
3) Quoting
- to cite someone's word, information and phrase
- don't forget using "quotation marks"
Here's links to helpful understanding

Truth and Lies
Have you ever told a lie to someone? In my opinion, no one haven't lied to someone to protect ourselves and companies, to make ourselves look cooler than we are and so on. Actually, I've lied to my parents, teacher and friends even though I know lying is not good. The more I lie to them, the more I have to keep telling a lie. Finally, it make me a liar.
One day when I didn't go to school I told my mom " I went to school and take classes like as usual." when I was a junior high school student. I told her as if I went to school even though she already knew what I hadn't gone school. According to her, I blushed, stuttered and tried to avert my gaze from mom while I was talking. So, I couldn't manipulate myself. It is outrightclue which she realize what I lied to her. It was insurmountable for me to tell a lie to mom, because she understand my personality and habit.
When my friend told me whether her boyfriend cheat on her, I told her "I don't think so, I'm sure he loves you." even though I had seen that he had been with another girl. In my opinion, she would feel hurt if I told her the truth. However, the concealment is not good for her, because she finally realized that and was wounded. If I hadn't covered up, she wouldn't have been wounded.
It's very harder to keep telling a lie than telling the truth. You have to realize that when you tell a lie.

Unit 1
Dear my mom,
I really really appriciate you, because you always encourage me and be my side. I don't usually thank to you, but I can't thank you enough. At first, Thank you so much for having brought me up for 20 years. I didn't listen what you and dad said when I was a junior high school student, so I was at a rebellious age. I regret having made a lot of trouble at that time. However, you scolded me when I did something wrong, and you were always on my side. And, thank you for giving me a chance to study English in Canada. I've wanted to study abroad since I was a senior high school student. I know it's not easy to let me study abroad, but you said,"I'm always rooting for you. If you face some problems, you shouldn't forget that I and dad are always on your side." This experience will be my treasure in my life.
I'm glad to have you as my mother. If I hadn't have you, I couldn't have done what I want to do. You're so special!!!

Self Introduction
Hello! I'm Manami, from Osaka, Japan. I've been here for four months, and I'm going to go back Japan on March 29, so I have just two months:( The reason why I came here is I want to study, make friends, know different culture, and so on. So, I want to talk more! And I want to know good place in Calgary, let me know if you have recommendation!
"YELL" is a Japanese song which is written and sung by Kobukuro. I've known it since I was senior high school student. I failed to pass the entrance exam of university I really wanted to go. So, I was so depressed and lost my passion to do everything. At that time, my friend recommended it, and then I listened. When I listened to it, I couldn't stop crying! I felt it cheered me up, so I thought I have to do my self. I know it is difficult for foreigners to understand, but I think it may encourage you!!!
